The Aramaic word “Effata” translates to “Be Opened,” a concept embraced by the Dumaguete Effata Association of the Deaf (DEAF) as a guiding principle in its mission to enhance the quality of life for Deaf people in Negros Oriental.
To open up and embrace possibilities means recognizing that while Deaf people may not hear, their other senses are often highly developed, enabling them to adapt, engage, and excel in various situations. Their abilities allow them to contribute meaningfully, perform tasks proficiently, and thrive alongside hearing individuals.
In the Gospel of Mark (Mk 7:34), Jesus heals a deaf man, opening his ears and loosening his tongue—an act that symbolizes both physical and spiritual transformation. Through this miracle, he receives the Gospel of salvation. Inspired by this, we share the same encouragement with Deaf signers who use Filipino Sign Language (FSL), empowering them to embrace opportunities that foster growth, productivity, and faith-driven leadership.

“Alone We Can Do So Little; Together We Can Do So Much.”
